About Jumpy! Classic
--------------------
The Series 3 platform game Jumpy! was first released as shareware in
September 1992. Version 2.01 was released commercially by Psion on Games
Pack 2.

Jumpy! Classic is a rewrite of the original for the 3a/3c. Version 1.00A
was released for one week, but soon replaced by version 1.00F which made
a few minor cosmetic changes. This is version 2.00F, which is partly
rewritten in C and features a 50-100% increase in game speed, digital
sound, revised help and some other minor alterations.

Installation
------------
Extract the files from the distribution archive using the -d flag with PkZip
to restore the original directory structure.

1. Copy the file JUMPYX.OPA into any \APP directory.
2. Create a new directory, \APP\JUMPYX
3. Copy CLASSIC.OPO into this directory.
4. Create another new directory, \APP\JUMPYX\CLASSIC
5. Copy GFX.PIC, JUMPY.HLP, SCREENS.DAT and JCENG.DYL into this directory.
6. If you wish to use digital sound, also copy *.WVE into the same directory.

In other words,

\APP\ contains JUMPYX.OPA
\APP\JUMPYX\ contains CLASSIC.OPO
\APP\JUMPYX\CLASSIC\ contains GFX.PIC, JUMPY.HLP, SCREENS.DAT, JCENG.DYL
and *.WVE if digital sound is required.

The reason for this slightly unusual directory structure is that add-on packs
for this game will be made available.

Instructions
------------
Once the game has been installed and run, you should then be presented with
the title screen bearing the name of the game. Press Enter to start a new
game.

On starting a game, you should see a little round thing with eyes and feet
sitting on a platform in the middle of the screen. That's Jumpy. You have
to guide him round each screen, picking up the spheres. When all of these
have been collected, a door opens. To finish a screen, enter this door.

Of course, it's not that simple. There are a few obstacles here and
there, arranged so as to give you as much hassle as possible - especially in
the later screens!

Spikes: Contact with spikes hurts, as you will find out. You lose one
of your three lives if you touch a spike.

Ice: Once you've got used to it, ice isn't that bad. The only problem
is that you can't stand still!

Creatures: They move left and right along a preset course. Touch one and
you lose one of your lives.

To move left, press either the left cursor key or "I".
To move right, press either the right cursor key or "P".
To jump, press the up cursor key or "Q".
If you switch to another task, the game will be automatically paused.

That's basically it. The first couple of screens are easy, to help you get
the hang of it - but some of the later levels are very, very hard!

The unregistered version only allows you to play the first six levels.

Sound
-----
If digital sound is not required, you do not have to copy the WVE files
to your Psion. If this is the case, you may also like to set the "Sound"
option to "Retro", for the original S3 beeps, or "Off" to remove any pauses
that occur when the program looks for the sound files.

You may replace the sound files with ones of your own if you prefer.
The file names are as follows:

START.WVE made when you start a new level or after dying.
SPHERE.WVE made when you pick up a sphere.
DOOR.WVE made when you have collected all the spheres and the exit
        door opens.
LEAVE.WVE made when you leave through the door.
DEATH.WVE made when you die.

Scores
------
The high score screen is available from the title screen, and is also
displayed if you achieve a high score. The high score screen has a menu,
from which you can reset the high scores, return to the title screen or
exit the program.

Memory
------
Jumpy! Classic requires approximately 80k free memory to run. If you
are using digital sounds, these will not play unless you have an extra
10k free, ie. 90k free in total.
As Jumpy! Classic stores the options, registration info and the high
scores in files on the internal drive (in a \GPK directory, as used by
Psion's own games packs), these may also become corrupt in low memory
situations. You will be warned if this is likely to happen, and the
program will attempt to resolve the situation.

Registration
------------
This information is also available in the online help, under the topic
"Registering". Jumpy! Classic is shareware. Until you have registered, the
program only allows you to play the first six levels. Registration allows
you to play the other 27, which get progressively harder.

Online Support
--------------
If you wish to report bugs or comment on Jumpy! Classic, please email
jnr95r@ecs.soton.ac.uk. The Jumpy! home page is located at
http://www.ecs.soton.ac.uk/~jnr95r/psion/jumpy.html.

Add-on Packs
-----------
The application JumpyX.OPA has been designed to allow for the addition of
add-on packs that will add new graphics, digital sound, more levels and the
possibility of new gameplay features. Check the Jumpy! home page for more
information.

Compatibility
-------------
Versions 1.00A and 1.00F of Jumpy! Classic came with JumpyX versions 3.00A
and 3.00F. The distribution of procedures between JumpyX.OPA and
Classic.OPO has radically changed with this release (J!C version 2.00F and
JX version 4.00F), with the effect that earlier versions are not compatible.
This should not cause you any problems - just make sure that if you have
an earlier version of Jumpy! Classic installed, you remove it before
installing this version. You will be notified of any problems when the
game starts.
